THE UNI HIGH BOYS’ JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM PLAYED THEIR LAST
HOME GAME OF THE YEAR THIS PAST WEEK.

THE HIGHLY SELECTIVE ‘PUBLIC ELITE’ SCHOOL ADMITS AROUND 65
STUDENTS PER YEAR. AS A RESULT OF THIS, ATHLETICS IS NOT A STRONG
PRIORITY.
UNI HIGH SPORTS TEAMS HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN NO-CUT, MEANING ALL
STUDENTS THAT TRY OUT MAKE THE TEAM.
THE ILLINEKS PLAY BASKETBALL AT KENNEY GYM, A BUILDING BUILT IN 1890
AS A MILITARY DRILL HALL. THE GYM IS LOCATED ON THE U OF I’S CAMPUS,
NEAR THE ENGINEERING QUAD.
NEWLY APPOINTED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR KYLE HUMMEL UNDERSTANDS THE
SCHOOL’S ACADEMIC FOCUS. HE SAYS THE ONLY WAY TO HELP HIS STUDENT
ATHLETES IMPROVE IS TO GET THEM ON THE COURT.

“THE MORE YOU PLAY, THE MORE YOU’RE GONNA GET BETTER.
I MEAN THAT’S WHAT WE NEED.
SO WE’RE GONNA DRILL INTO THESE KIDS, HOPEFULLY IN THE SUMMER AND
HAVE OPEN GYM AND, “HEY JUST COME IN HERE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN”
BECAUSE LAST SUMMER THEY DIDN’T PLAY ANYTHING
